Getting there

On-mountain, halfway up

Ski Racers is perched halfway up the Rock Garden ski run on Whakapapa Ski Field, Mt Ruapehu. You cannot drive to the lodge — access is on foot or on skis.

Walking up: From the Whakapapa ticketing buildings, the base of the Rock Garden ski run is right beyond the day ski/snowboard racks. You are able to walk up the Rock Garden ski run before 9am, and after 4pm. Walking up in the middle of the run can be dangerous with skiers so make sure you stick to the side of the trail. Follow the ski run for 600m until you see a number of lodges on the left ridge above the run. Ski Racers is the closest one to the ski run. Allow approximately 20 minutes.

Skiing down: At 9am and again at 4pm, you can take the Rangatira chairlift up (the chairlift next to the the Sky Waka gondola). Be at the chairlift base station 15 mins before. Many people carry gear in a large backpack. The lifties are generally quite accommodating helping you load baggage onto the chairlift. Follow the Rock Garden run down — the lodge will be visible on your right halfway down. Try to ski up the ridge as far as you can, then you only have a few metres to walk.

Parking: Look for specially marked club/overnight parking areas. Most clubbies turn left at the top of the road (heading past the drop-off zone) and park by the clubs there. Don’t park in day parks or drop-off zones — these are cleared overnight.
