The Lodge

Ski Racers is a members’ lodge on Whakapapa — ski-in, ski-out, open to anyone who loves the mountain, not just racers, and not just skiers. Because the lodge sits on a DOC concession, it operates as a members’ club rather than a hotel — which means your annual membership is what unlocks the best accommodation on the mountain.

Ski Racers is predominantly a family-based club with a deliberately low membership — which means you actually get a booking when you want one. Members come from across the North Island: Auckland, the Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Rotorua, Taupo and beyond.

The club was founded in 1962 using the original Lockwood open-plan design — a simple, practical space for people who wanted to be on the mountain. Over the following decades, two major upgrade programmes transformed the lodge into what it is today.

Stage 1 brought a new entrance, ski and drying rooms, additional bunk rooms, cedar cladding and a complete electrical rewire. Stage 2 expanded the lounge, extended the bathrooms and installed the first air conditioning. Stage 3 replaced all lounge and dining windows with modern double-glazed units, and new ovens, carpet, a woodburner and upgraded mattresses have been added throughout.
